Fostering Climate Resilience

WITH THE PASSAMAQUODDY TRIBE OF SIPAYIK

The mission of the Sipayik Resilience Committee is to foster climate resilience and make energy efficiency technology more accessible to members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point following community directed goals.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

Grid Resilience

Community Microgrid

In partnership with the Penobscot Nation, we are planning to develop an energy plan for a  community driven microgrid  that will be connected to renewable energy.

We are also developing a an energy auditing workforce development program for tribal members.

Renewable Energy

Solar Power

A Climate to Thrive is assisting the tribes to set up an intertribal community solar steering committee that will help each tribe set up a plan for community solar. This will eventually be handed off to the Wabanaki Sustainable Energy Coordinator.

Energy Efficiency

Heat Pumps – Window Inserts

Through the EPA Heat Pump grant, we are currently working with the Pleasant Point Housing Authority to distribute heat pumps to homes.

Building on the success of the 2023 build, when 31 homes received window inserts to increase energy efficiency, we will support a 2024 window insert build between Pleasant Point and Indian Township.

Our plan is to transition homes away from oil by utilizing energy efficient heating sources and through energy audits on homes.

Climate Resilience

Grid Resilience Formula Grant Funding

Penobscot Nation is the lead tribe on this. We will get an energy plan for the tribe that will set us up for a microgrid/battery storage for the tribe. Plan is for that to be hooked up to renewable energy.

Supports a community driven microgrid. Ask Sharon what is going on with this project.

NSF Storm

Would support materials and funding for an energy auditing workforce development program for tribal members.
