A community window insert building workshop is a “barn-raising” type of event that involves members of a given community coming together in a multiple-day workshop to build window inserts for themselves and their community.
In 2023, 266 inserts for both Eastport and Pleasant Point residents were built and distributed free for tribal members.
Window inserts are pine frames wrapped in 2 layers of transparent plastic and lined with weather-stripping that are compression-installed on the interior side of existing window frames to reduce heat loss, save money, and reduce negative environmental impacts from fossil fuel use for heating. A community window insert building workshop is a “barn-raising” type of event that involves members of a given community coming together in a multiple-day workshop to build window inserts for themselves and their community, trained by volunteers from a Maine-based non-profit organization called WindowDressers. Low-income households are eligible for free window inserts.
The 2023 window insert build was funded through the Community Action Grant and was facilitated in collaboration with the City of Eastport.
2024 Build
A window insert build is being planned for Fall, 2024. More information about ordering inserts will be available in the next few months.
Sipayik Resilience has applied for a Community Action Grant to support a 2024 window insert build between Pleasant Point and Indian Township and insulation for residential homes. We are still in the planning phase for this grant and are gearing up for the build for later this fall.
